The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations body. While the Security Council has an administrative component (such as approving changes to the UN charter, and recommending new members to the General Assembly), the Security Council is also charged with ensuring international security. Though the United Nations has no official standing army of its own, the Security Council largely has both the authority and means to deploy United Nations peace keepers to regions of conflict, significant unrest, or where emergency aid is necessary. These peacekeepers are often used as a way to promote and maintain a strong UN presence in the region, and only take orders from the UNSC, not the local governments of the regions in which they are deployed. It is important to understand these peacekeepers are not a military, but instead are meant to help facilitate negotiations and represent UN interests in the region. This meeting of the the United Nations Security Council is being held at the UNSC's permanent residence at the United Nations headquarters in New York, NY (USA) and seeks to resolve issues surrounding Niger's recent political crisis as well as to address the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. While these issues have the potential to cause internal strife and division amongst the members of the Security Council, many of the solutions require intra-state cooperation, given that the uniqueness and complexity of both of these situations is relatively unprecedented. Will the Security Council be able to address the problems in Niger and Nagorno-Karabakh, or will the world have another conflict to take the media by storm?
